Getting Around Sarasota & Manatee Counties

Tips for driving, traffic, toll roads, public transit, airports, and biking around the area.

Driving & Traffic

Sarasota is primarily car-dependent. Getting around is straightforward once you learn the main roads, seasonal traffic patterns, and beach bottlenecks.

RoadwayWhat to Know
I-75The main north-south highway, connecting Sarasota to Tampa to the north and Naples to the south.
US 41 (Tamiami Trail)A major north-south surface road that runs parallel to I-75 and passes through downtown.
Fruitville Road & University ParkwayKey east-west corridors connecting I-75 to central Sarasota, UTC, and beach-bound routes.
Clark Road (SR 72)A heavily used east-west route for traffic heading to Siesta Key and points south.
  • Rush hour usually peaks from 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM.
  • Snowbird season from January through April can make a 20-minute drive take 45 minutes.
  • Avoid driving to or from barrier islands between 1 PM and 8 PM on busy weekends.
  • St. Armands Circle is a frequent traffic pinch point, especially during peak shopping and beach hours.

Road Improvements & Projects

  • Clark Road (SR 72) PD&E Study for possible widening from I-75 to Lorraine Road.
  • SR 776 safety improvements with separators and protected bike-lane planning.
  • North Sarasota Multimodal Connector planning, with timelines varying by phase.
  • City speed-limit studies for safer local streets and lower speeds on many roads.

Toll Roads & SunPass

I-75 is toll-free locally, but nearby Tampa-area routes may have tolls. A SunPass or E-PASS is useful and usually cheaper than Toll-By-Plate billing.

For real-time alerts, Florida residents can call 511 for FDOT traffic conditions.
