Overview: Sarasota and Manatee School Districts
Finding the right school is one of the most important decisions you will make when relocating to Southwest Florida. Sarasota and Manatee counties are home to some of Florida's highest-rated school districts, nationally recognized magnet and charter programs, and a diverse range of private options.
Florida ranks K-12 education by district. Sarasota County Schools consistently lands near the top of Florida rankings, while Manatee County Schools sits in the top tier statewide. For relocating families, these numbers stand up well against destinations like Naples, Tampa, and Cape Coral.
Important note: school zoning is granular. Two homes a quarter-mile apart can be assigned to different elementary schools. Always verify the school zone for a specific address using the free zone-lookup tools on each district's website before committing to a home.

Pine View School: Florida's Stand-Alone Gifted Public School
Pine View School deserves its own section because it is unlike anything else in the state. Established by Sarasota County School District in 1969, Pine View is the only stand-alone public gifted school in Florida and one of only a few in the nation. It serves intellectually gifted students in grades 2 through 12, allowing admitted students to stay through graduation without a middle-school transition.
Academic performance is exceptional: 99% reading proficiency, 100% math proficiency, 100% graduation rate, 100% college acceptance, average SAT around 1420, average ACT around 32, and AP enrollment around 78%.
Admission is based on gifted eligibility, individualized academic standardized testing, academic performance, teacher recommendations, and other factors. Living in Osprey does not guarantee a seat, but it can shorten the commute if your child is admitted.
A word of caution: many families move to Osprey specifically for Pine View, but gifted admissions are not guaranteed. Have a backup plan, such as Laurel Nokomis School for younger students or Venice High School for older students.

Charter Schools in Sarasota and Manatee Counties
Charter schools are tuition-free, publicly funded schools that operate independently of traditional school district zoning. They often offer specialized curricula and can be excellent alternatives to neighborhood-assigned schools.
| Charter School | Grades | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sarasota Military Academy | 6-12 | Leadership development, JROTC, college prep, and character education. |

Magnet Schools and Specialized Programs
Suncoast Polytechnical High School is Sarasota County's only magnet high school. It balances Career and Technical Education courses with rigorous college-preparatory work. Students can pursue pathways such as animation, gaming, engineering, robotics, business, entrepreneurship, biomedical studies, and the AP Capstone Diploma Program.
Suncoast Technical College offers career and technical education programs for high school students and adults on the same campus as Suncoast Polytechnical High School.
Manatee Technical College offers vocational and technical programs for high school students and adults in Bradenton, including automotive, healthcare, construction, information technology, culinary arts, and more.
School Choice and Controlled Open Enrollment
Florida's school choice initiative allows families to apply to attend certain public schools outside the school assigned by residential address. Controlled Open Enrollment gives parents and guardians a chance to apply for another school during designated windows.
The application period typically opens in February and runs through early March. Applications are online, placements are subject to space availability, and families should complete new-student registration forms as part of the choice application.
Choice does not guarantee placement. Gifted magnet programs like Pine View require testing and evaluation, and not every neighborhood school can accommodate every program or service need.
How to Verify School Zones and Enrollment
- Sarasota County: use the School Zone Lookup tool on the Sarasota County Schools website, check Focus Parent Portal details, or contact the district directly.
- Manatee County: use the School Zone Lookup tool on the Manatee County School District website.
- Manatee County note: new attendance zones for elementary and middle schools are expected for 2026-2027, with high school map changes tied to the newest high school opening.
- Always run the lookup for every property. Homes on the same street can have different assignments, and school assignment can affect daily routines and resale value.
